The Glen Rea Settlement Past and Present – School Workshop

In 2016, Kilmartin Museum ran a project in Campbeltown Grammar School to engage pupils in exploring the local farming settlement of Glenrea in the south of the Kintyre peninsula. The pupils used a variety of resources, including museum artefacts and site visits to get an insight into the lives of the people who worked the land in the 18th and 19th centuries.

Local Voices also worked with the pupils to look at what could be learned from the area’s traditional songs. One song in particular, ‘The Thatchers of Glenrea’, opened a window not only into working life in the area, but also the seasonal migration that connected Kintyre with the north of Ireland. The pupils were taught the song, after which Local Voices made a recording of their performance to be featured as part of the exhibition of the pupils’ project work in Campbeltown Museum.
